Sony Xperia ion launch & certified ST27 Phones

Back in January we brought you news on the Sony Xperia ion, an upcoming Android smartphone that looked pretty decent. We’ve been waiting to hear further news on the Xperia ion and today we have news that a launch may be closer and also some news about a Sony ST27 phone that has now received certification.
As a brief recap on the Xperia ion we can tell you that it has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.6-inch 720p display, 16GB of internal storage expandable via microSD, 4G LTE connectivity and it will be running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The lack of Android 4.0 ICS is a bit of a letdown but we’d imagine an update will come fairly shortly. It’s standout feature though is a 12-megapixel camera with Exmor R sensor, which will appeal to many.
Although a release in Q2 was bandied about it seemed rather odd that we’d not heard much recently about this phone but now the Xperia blog brings the news that the GCF (Global Certification Forum) finally certified the Xperia ion last week and hopefully this means a launch is not too far away. It does seem rather odd though that Sony has let this phone be almost forgotten about rather than let us have more information, particularly considering the fact that many other phones unveiled around the same time have already been released.
In more Sony smartphone news, it seems a phone dubbed the Sony Xperia ST27 has also been certified by the UPnP forum, possibly the successor to the Sony Xperia active, or ST17. Ubergizmo tells how specs and features for this phone have not yet been detailed although it’s rumored it will use something like the 1GHz dual-core processor found in the Xperia P and U, have a 3.5-inch display with resolution of 480 x 854 and a 5-megapixel camera. We’ll keep you informed with more on this handset as we hear it.
Meanwhile if you’re waiting for release details of the Xperia ion you could check out a video below this story showing the Xperia ion at CES 2012 in January. You’ll see it’s a very nicely-styled handset and all Sony needs to do now is get it on shelves, hopefully before too much longer. Let us know if you’re waiting for the Xperia ion and if it’s the camera that particularly appeals to you?
